Amazon now offers exceptions to Payments Based on Delivery Reserve

As you know, thousands of Amazon Sellers learned a few days ago that from then on, Amazon will be withholding their funds as a part of a new Payments Based on Delivery disbursement schedule.

The new policy affected only the most veteran merchants who have been trading on the platform for more than 7 years. Under the new policy, all sellers have their funds withheld and unavailable for disbursement until after 7 days past each order’s Estimated Delivery Date.

This means, that sellers who have been successfully selling on Amazon for several years and earned a track record of providing great service will be treated in the same manner, as those who just registered to sell on Amazon.

Many outraged sellers reached out to journalists and government authorities, while others started aggressively opening cases with Amazon and demanding a resolution internally.

The lobbying apparently worked as some sellers are now reporting notifications being received from Amazon informing them about the reserve being exceptionally lifted from their accounts:

Here is a copy of the wording:

Thank you for reaching out to us in regard to the change in your reserve policy. The Delivery Date +7 (“DD+7”) policy means sales revenue is held for 7 days after delivery and has been the standard worldwide policy for sellers since 2016. This migration will standardise this policy for European sellers to ensure they have sufficient funds to cover any financial obligations, like product returns or customer claims.

We understand that the transition to this policy on 3 August has caused a one-time cash-flow issue for your business. To support you in preparing for the policy change, we have extended your policy transition until 31 January 2024. You will revert to your prior reserve policy in impacted stores within 48 hours.

The DD+7 changes which we have outlined in our previous communications will still come into effect on 31 January 2024.

Please note, that this is not a reason for a celebration. This backtrack approach has been applied towards selected accounts belonging to sellers who complained either to Amazon or lobbied using different means. If you have not complained to Amazon, you will not be included.

Similarly, as of today, the policy is still anticipated to go ahead starting 31 January 2024, unless further lobbying efforts are successful.
