Recently, I informed you in my article about Amazon’s aggressive crusade to purge their platform of any suspiciously behaving Buyer Accounts. The difference with these account closures is that unlike before, Amazon is not just suspending Seller Accounts over alleged violations of the Seller Code of Conduct, but this time the company is targeting specifically Buyer Accounts. Affected accounts are getting closed by Amazon due to failure to comply with ”terms of our Conditions of Use agreement”. Since Buyer Account closures (as opposed to Seller Account suspensions) are not widely known in the Amazon Seller community, sellers are struggling to appeal them.
If you are not familiar with the matter, read my article, where I am explaining how getting your Buyer Account closed impacts your Seller Account. In short – you won’t be able to access your Seller Account using the same credentials as your Buyer Account.
The wave of Buyer Account closures includes mainly Dropshippers, who are placing orders through the buyer side of their Seller Account and having goods delivered directly to their customers.
What is new
The wording mentioning ”purchasing products in order to receive compensation directly from the Sellers” is referring to the use of discount codes advertised in buyer groups on Facebook or elsewhere on social media.
However, there is another category of alleged misconduct, which Amazon is pursuing – sales rank manipulation.
In cases, when these violations are detected, the seller has his Buyer Account closed with the following deactivation wording:
“We have closed your Amazon.co.uk account. We took this action because you have misused Amazon’s services. Examples of misuse include placing orders for your own products or purchasing products in order to receive compensation directly from the Sellers.”
Here is a screenshot of the full notice sent by Account Specialist (which is the buyer side alternative for Seller Performance):
This is what follows, when the shocked seller responds back to this e-mail, without attempting to properly appeal:
“After a thorough review, we have decided not to restore your full access to this account. You will not be able to place orders on our site.”
If you are wondering, what does this mean in a simple language – any order of the same merchandise placed on Amazon, which you at some point listed (or will list) for sale on the platform as a third party seller can get your account closed.
This means that you won’t be able to purchase products on Amazon for a later resale on their marketplace.
At the same time, you won’t be able to ever purchase the same product, which you used to sell on Amazon in the past.
Examples of violations of Amazon’s Terms of Service, which can get your Buyer Account Closed and lock you out of your Seller Account:
- You purchase a textbook for school off Amazon and then attempt to sell it on their platform – once you no longer need it.
- You mistakenly purchase the wrong size / quantity of a product on Amazon and decide to sell it on their platform, instead of returning it for a refund.
- You are selling a product on both Amazon and your own website. Once you run out of stock, in order to continue fulfilling orders on your own website, you order some units from another seller on the identical listing on Amazon.
- You are a FBA seller and you decide to surprise your family member on his birthday by placing an order from your own store on Amazon using your Buyer Account and having the merchandise shipped to the family member.
- You are a seller on Amazon and you suddenly notice another seller offering identical product as what you are selling for a significantly lower price, so you decide to restock by purchasing his inventory.
- You place a test buy from an alleged counterfeiter on your own Amazon listing.
These were just examples and while you may not believe something like this could happen over innocent situations like these, I have seen numerous sellers with their Buyer Accounts closed due to these reasons.
In Amazon’s eyes, any ordering of the same product which you sold (or are planning to sell in the future) is viewed as sales rank manipulation.
If you are an Amazon Seller, I would strongly advise you NOT TO EVER BUY ON AMAZON. The potential negative consequences of something going wrong are not worth it.
