Amazon Japan introduces a new, draconian returns policy

Following a similar policy being implemented across different international Amazon marketplaces, Amazon Japan is now also requiring all sellers to provide a local return address or offer a returnless refund.

Previously, international Amazon sellers were able to provide a pre-paid return label to their own country while now, the option will no longer available and maintaining a local return address will be mandatory, unless the seller accepts that any return request initiated will result in an automated full refund.

Having a return address in every country in the world where Amazon has a presence is extremely time-consuming and costly, especially if you are a small seller who isn’t processing hundreds of returns per month or sells low value items.

Amazon effectively bullies sellers into giving away items for free unless they can jump through extreme hoops.

[Important] Returnless Refunds for Merchant-fulfilled returns

Hello,

Change in policy for returns where there is no local return address:
Our long standing returns policy for processing an international return is described in “Customer returns for international sales ( https://sellercentral.amazon.co.jp/gp/help/G201468550 )”. Customers must be provided with one of the three methods: 1) a return address within Japan, 2) a full refund without requesting that the item be returned (returnless refund), or 3) pre-paid return mailing label for international returns.

As announced on April 28, 2021 and noted in “Customer returns for international sales ( https://sellercentral.amazon.co.jp/gp/help/G201468550 )”, effective July 28, 2021, Amazon will issue the customer a returnless refund to an international return request regardless of providing a pre-paid return mailing label if a valid return address in Japan is not provided and the total price of returned items is less than or equal to 1,000 JPY (including C-tax and excluding shipping fee). We believe this change will help deliver a more convenient return experience for our customers while reducing the burden on you to process a return.

You can check your return address from Return settings ( https://sellercentral.amazon.co.jp/gp/returns/settings ). Our International Returns Provider on the Solution Provider Network ( https://sellercentral.amazon.co.jp/tsba ) may be able to help if you do not have a local return address.

Thank you.
