Many online marketplaces require sellers to comply with applicable laws and provide their business identity details, which are then publicly available to potential customers.
Filling your VAT number can also help you save money on selling fees and this is the reason why some sellers resort to stealing other people’s information and using them in their own accounts.
A third party Amazon Seller Vicky Hemdev from the United Kingdom who also sells on eBay recently discovered that his company VAT number is being fraudulently used by another trader.
EBay seller with storefront name Xenon-UK inserted Vicky’s company registration number and VAT numbers into his eBay profile to avoid having to pay taxes to UK and German authorities.
Items are being shipped to buyers from Latvia, despite the seller account appears to belong to an UK-based seller.
Despite the disgruntled seller reported this serious matter to eBay, HMRC and Action Fraud, nothing is being done and the business is still actively trading using his details.
Vicky would like to raise awareness and prompt other sellers to verify if someone else isn’t using their VAT numbers.
*UPDATE:
Within two hours of this article being posted, the company details belonging to Vicky Hemdev were removed from xenon-uk’s eBay storefront and all listings are now gone as well.
