What is so-called Amazon Product Hunting?

Amazon Product Hunting is the process of analyzing current market trends to choose products which have high potential to succeed and generate high sales. The idea is to source products that you can buy cheap and sell them for competitive prices with a good profit margin in return. This process is mostly referring to business models where you are about to manufacture your own product or brand existing generic products without trademark with your own brand logo.

How to do Product Hunting?

There are many tools you can use to analyze market on Amazon to get the estimated data of a niche to analyze its worth. The most used tools for Product Hunting are listed below:

  • Jungle Scout
  • Helium 10
  • AMZScout
  • Viral Launch
  • Egrow

While you “hunting for product ideas”, you want to know that Amazon have so-called gated categories:

A gated category is a category of products that has required Amazon’s approval. To get ungated (be allowed to sell) in certain categories, Amazon might request invoice, product classification and qualification documents.

Gated categories on Amazon are always changing and every Amazon Seller might have different categories, sub-categories or brands gated. To find if you are gated in certain category, in Amazon Seller Central follow these steps: Inventory > Add Product > search for competitor product you have interest to sell and you should see option to list it or that you need to Request Approval.

For ungating or in formal words Requesting Approval Amazon will want you to provide invoices, product images and in some cases certificates of the product. As a new seller it’s going to be easier to stick with categories which are usually ungated for sellers with New Amazon Seller Account. *If you need help with ungating Amazon category, reach out to Vlad Čoki (Co-Founder of Seller Union) via his Seller Union profile or via Facebook.

Below I am listing products which I would suggest to avoid for new sellers because they will give you unnecessary challenges at the beginning of your online selling journey:

  • Oversized Products – Products with any side greater than 18inches comes under Oversized
  • Easily Breakable
  • Hazmat Products / Dangerous Goods
  • Lithium ION Batteries
  • Products with Multiple Variations
  • Patented Products
